Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Maiden Speech
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
