UEFA has initiated a disciplinary case against Chelsea's Pedro Neto following an incident where he knocked over a ball boy in a Champions League defeat against PSG.

The Portugal international, Pedro Neto, shoved the youngster in stoppage time of Wednesday's knockout stage fixture at Parc des Princes – where Chelsea lost 5-2 – an action that led to the boy falling from a stool.

It sparked a confrontation involving both sets of players.

Officials stated action has been taken against Neto for "unsporting behaviour" as per the official rules.

"The relevant committees will decide regarding this matter in the coming days," European football's governing body added in its statement.

Neto said sorry after the match and blamed getting swept up "in the intensity of the match" as he tried to quickly retrieve the ball.

"This is out of character for me. Emotions were running high and I sincerely apologise. My shirt was given to him. I deeply regret it - I owe him an apology," Neto told the media.

"I have limited French, so teammate Vitinha stepped in and told him that this isn't my normal behaviour.

"Eventually he accepted the apology and I gave him my shirt apologising many times. He realized what had happened and was happy with the outcome."

Chelsea host Paris St-Germain in the upcoming second leg for the return fixture, following Newcastle's visit at their home ground this weekend in the Premier League.
