The English along with Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
