Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important representative said the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
